Essential Driver Training, explained

Your 12 EDT lessons.
EDT stands for Essential Driver Training. It's twelve one-hour sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Here's what each one covers.

Car controls and safety checks
Get to know the controls and check the car before setting off.

Correct positioning 1
Place the car safely on the road, through bends and at junctions.

Changing direction 1
Use mirrors, signals and observations when turning or changing course.

Progression management
Control your pace on quieter roads and leave enough room to stop.

Correct positioning 2More complex situations
Handle more complex road layouts, lane changes, parking and reversing.

Anticipation and reaction
Spot developing hazards early and decide how to respond safely.

Sharing the road
Give other road users space and judge when to wait or pass.

Driving safely through traffic
Make safe progress in traffic while keeping time and space to react.

Bring your observations and decisions together at more complex junctions.

Choose a safe speed as traffic, visibility and road conditions change.

How EDT works
Start with session 1
Complete sessions 2 to 8 before moving to 9 to 12. Your instructor plans the order within each group.
Practise between sessions
The Road Safety Authority recommends two weeks between sessions for supervised practice. EDT is only part of learning to drive.
Keep track as you go
Bring your logbook to each lesson. Your instructor records completed sessions and uploads them so you can check your progress in MyEDT.
Reduced EDT: some foreign licence holders can take six sessions instead. Get approval from the Road Safety Authority before booking reduced EDT.

The cost of the full EDT
Twelve manual lessons cost €587.95. Twelve automatic lessons cost €659.24. The prices are the same across all twelve Leinster counties.
Picking a lesson time
Tell us your preferred start date and your town. We will check instructor availability and agree times with you.
Manual or automatic
We offer both. Tell us which you want when checking instructor availability, or call to talk through the choice.
Keeping track of completed lessons
Your instructor records your EDT sessions. You can view the uploaded sessions in your MyEDT account.
Preparing for the test
Talk to your instructor about the skills you still need to practise. Pretest lessons are also available when you are ready.
